Having performed spectacularly well last year in the retrospective of ten-year old Napa Cabernets, this 2001 remains incredibly young, with all of its potential waiting to burst forth. Its dense purple color is followed by notes of mulberries, creme de cassis, blackberries, licorice, graphite and subtle smoke. The wine reveals fabulous fruit along with full-bodied power and a seamless integration of acidity, tannin, alcohol and wood. Forget it for another 4-5 years and drink it over the following 25-30 years-RP

(13.9% alcohol; 2 tons per acre): Good dark red. A bit darker on the nose than the 2, showing noteworthy complexity to the aromas of plum, graphite and truffle. Wonderfully creamy flavors of redcurrant, spices and flowers are framed by vibrant acidity. The lovely aromatic finish shows a broad, firm dusting of tannins, a captivating light touch and excellent length and lift. This is ultimately a bit more developed and expressive on the nose than the 2 but has the energy to hold well.- Stephen Tanzer (6/216)
