One of the most surprising results of the Philadelphia tasting was how spectacular the 1982 Meyney has turned out. I was enthusiastic about this wine when it was young, but I have not revisited it as frequently as others. It boasts a gorgeously perfumed, sweet nose of black fruits, damp earth, truffles, herbs, and toasty wood. Dense and full-bodied, with moderate tannin, fabulous concentration, an unctuous texture, and a low acid, thick, juicy finish, it should drink well for 10-15 years. An amazing accomplishment, it is one of the vintage's most noteworthy sleepers. RP
