In a vintage that produced so many austere, spartan-styled wines, Certan de May turned out one of the vintage's stars. The wine has retained a vigor and youthfulness that makes me believe it will be one of the longer-lived examples of the vintage. The color remains a healthy dark ruby with no lightening at the edge. A reticent aroma offers mineral, black cherry, earthy, and spice notes. On the palate, the wine is powerful and rich, somewhat austere, yet remarkably layered, thick Pomerol that is atypical for the vintage. The wine can be drunk now, but it requires another 1-3 years of bottle age. Anticipated maturity: 1999-2012. Last tasted 9/97-RP

Ties for first place in this vintage. A blockbuster, yet harmonious. Great dark color with layers of chocolate, olive, berry flavor. Full bodied and tannic but very velvety. Drinkable now or hold for as long as you like.--The Bordeaux 50. — JS (10/1994)
