About the Wine

Taylor Fladgate holds one of the most extensive reserves of very old cask aged Port of any producer.   They include a collection of rare Single Harvest Ports.  These are Ports from a single year which age to full maturity in seasoned oak casks and display the year of harvest on the label.

Taylor Fladgate has decided to make a limited release, each year, of a Single Harvest Port made 50 years previously.

The third in the series is the 1966 Single Harvest.

Taylor Fladgate's Managing Director, Adrian Bridge, commented:   "A 50th birthday or anniversary is a landmark occasion.  Taylor Fladgate's Single Harvest Ports offer a unique opportunity to celebrate with an extraordinary 50 year old wine in perfect condition.”  The Taylor Fladgate Single Harvest Port is presented in the classic frosted bottle associated with Taylor Fladgate's celebrated range of Aged Tawny Ports.

Tasting Notes

Medium golden mahogany, with a hint of olive green on the meniscus. The nose is complex with aromas of walnut, macadamia, brown sugar and a warm spicy background of molasses and caramel. The palate is smooth and honeyed, with rich spice, figs, mocha and confit apricot. The acidity is marked and the finish long with beautiful balance.

94 pts - Wine Advocate

The 1966 Single Harvest Tawny Port (i.e., a Colheita) is a traditional blend, aged in French and American oak. It comes in at 183 grams per liter of residual sugar. Surprisingly rich and fresh, this seems younger than its age. The complexity here is not quite as great as with some and the nuances of molasses and the like are controlled. On the other side of the coin, it has a rather sensual texture, finishing with a sugary burst. Underneath is the expected acidity and a bit of pop. Overall, it is rather seductive and quite delicious. Note that this will be released in January 2016, part of Taylor's old Colheita releases.-MS

96 pts - Wine Spectator

Very elegant, with notes of tobacco and cedar to the lush butter cream, ripe pear and dried apricot flavors. Seductive tropical fruit and spice notes linger on the endless finish, revealing citrusy hints. Drink now. 175 cases imported. — KM

97 pts - Vinous

The 1966 Taylor's Vintage Port is a hugely overlooked Port. The bouquet is typical 1966 and oddly mirrors a Left Bank Bordeaux: conservative and masculine, yet detailed and offering attractive scents of cigar box, mahogany bureau, sandalwood and ripe cherry. The palate is foursquare with wonderful structure, spicier and more vigorous than the 1963 with greater persistence and focus. There is a wonderful bead of acidity and it feels virile and fresh on the finish that has beguiling symmetry. Later it reveals wild strawberry, cigar box, apricot and autumn leaves with superb precision. Surely the best Port of the vintage! Tasted in the Factory House in Porto for "Taylor's - The Story of a Classic Port House" book. Bottled 2015.-NM
