About Harlan Estate

There is a lot to know about Harlan Estate, the famed winery in the hills above Oakville, but one of the most interesting parts of the story is its founder, Bill Harlan. Raised in Whittier, California, he was entrepreneurial from childhood, earning money at age six by tending his neighbors' victory gardens. He was also a remarkable risk taker. His early adult years included surfing, motorcycle racing, daredevil flying, a turn as an Olympic water polo hopeful, professional poker, a year hitchhiking around Africa and sailing around the world. His career was just as varied, from fixing marine engines at sea to working as a stockbroker and a real estate developer before becoming a winery owner.

Bill Harlan spent time in Napa Valley while attending UC Berkeley, and by 1979 he had fallen in love with the idea of the wine country lifestyle. That year he purchased Meadowood, a struggling resort off the Silverado Trail, and turned it into one of California's top-rated luxury resorts and restaurants. He also helped found the Napa Valley Wine Auction, today known as Auction Napa Valley, which was first held in 1981.

To gain winemaking experience, he became a partner in Merryvale Vineyards in 1983. Working first at a custom crush facility in Calistoga, Bill and his newly assembled team set out to learn how to make world-class wine, and Merryvale soon flourished. He later sold his interest in Merryvale to focus on his own estate.

In 1984 he acquired the land that would become Harlan Estate: forest-like wilderness in the hills above Oakville, so untouched that he needed a machete just to look around. He spent years planning the layout of the vineyards and buildings to last for generations, paying careful attention to preventing erosion and minimizing the impact on nature. The first vintage was produced in 1990, and the wine was first released in 1996, twelve years after the land was acquired.

Harlan Estate has earned extraordinary critical acclaim, including perfect 100-point scores from Robert Parker, and demand for its wines among collectors remains intense. The Maiden, the estate's second wine, is made with the same attention to detail. Bill Harlan went on to create other projects as well, including BOND, The Napa Valley Reserve and Promontory, and in 2021 he named his son, Will Harlan, managing director of the family's wineries.
