BOND, owned by Bill Harlan and made in the same winery by the same winemaking team as Harlan Estate, is his expression of Grand Cru quality from terroirs outside the Harlan Estate vineyard in Oakville. Inspired by Burgundy's single-site approach but focused on Cabernet Sauvignon, BOND made its first commercial release with the 1999 vintage. Five vineyards now sit under the BOND umbrella, each bottled separately, along with Matriarch, a blend drawn from all of the BOND sites.
Melbury comes from a spectacular property on the slopes north of Lake Hennessey, in the hills east of Rutherford. Its name is an homage to a historic area in London. Since its debut with the 1999 vintage, Melbury's consistent hallmarks have been plush red fruits such as currants and Bing cherries, spice and the scent of violets, with elegance and a supple texture. The rocky 7-acre hillside vineyard faces south over Lake Hennessey, capturing the morning sun while moderating afternoon temperatures, on ancient sedimentary soil with compressed clay at about 350 feet.
Vecina is located just down the road from Harlan Estate, home of the BOND winery, in western Oakville. Its name comes from the Spanish word for neighbor. The 11-acre site has beautifully terraced volcanic slopes at about 221 feet that face due east and receive cool morning sun. Vecina, which appeared with the 1999 vintage in the inaugural BOND release, is always powerful, intense and savory, with blackberry fruit, wild forest floor and mineral overtones.
St. Eden comes from an 11-acre rocky knoll on an estate just north of the Oakville Crossroad; "Eden" refers to the area's designation on nineteenth-century maps. The red, rocky soil of this north-facing site originates high in the Vaca Mountains. First released with the 2001 vintage, St. Eden reliably shows great focus, an opulent "sweet" center and notes of crème de cassis, dark chocolate and roasted herbs. Its iron-rich, fractured volcanic soil gives a mineral-tinged, broad palate with fine-grained tannins and lush concentration. At 145 to 188 feet, it is the lowest-elevation site in the Harlan portfolio.
Pluribus, on the dramatic slopes of Spring Mountain west of St. Helena at about 1,100 feet, launched with the 2003 vintage. Bold, rich and concentrated, it shows dark plum, roasted coffee and cedar. Its name, from the Latin word for "many," reflects the many facets involved in creating a fine wine, from the sun, soil and climate of the vineyard to the team who guide the wine through its evolution. North and east exposures and volcanic bedrock add to the uniqueness of this terroir.
Quella comes from a 9-acre site in the eastern hills overlooking the heart of Napa Valley. Debuting with the 2006 vintage, its name derives from the German word for a pristine source or artesian spring. The steep, southwest-facing site, at 433 to 595 feet, is an ancient riverbed of cobble and rocks interwoven with pockets of tufa (volcanic ash). Quella displays an almost ethereal quality of blue fruits and graphite with a vibrant, subtle finish.
The BOND wines have earned wide critical praise. Reviewing the 2012 and 2013 vintages in The Wine Advocate in October 2015, Robert Parker scored them 93 to 100 points and wrote that they "are made with absolutely no compromises," noting that the wines from great vintages have decades of aging potential.
