About the Gros Family

Few names are as woven into the history of Vosne-Romanée as Gros. The family's winemaking story dates back to 1860, when Alphonse Gros, who had married into the Latour family, bought an estate that included a then little-known vineyard in Vosne-Romanée called Clos des Réas. Six generations of family winemakers followed, and a seventh is now at work.

The Early Generations

Alphonse's elder son, Louis-Gustave Gros, took over the domaine. He married into the Guenaud family and sold his wine under the name Gros-Guenaud, and he was one of the first growers in the region to bottle his own wine and sell it directly. His son Jules Gros renamed the label Gros-Renaudot after his own wife and expanded the estate with parcels in Clos de Vougeot, Grands-Échezeaux and Échezeaux, before handing it to his son Louis shortly before his death in 1930.

Louis ran the domaine for about two decades before passing it to his four children: Jean, François, Gustave and Colette. In 1963 the siblings decided to divide the estate. François took Clos de Vougeot "Le Grand Maupertui". Gustave and Colette, who had no children of their own, joined forces under the name Gros Frère et Sœur, with parcels including Grands-Échezeaux and the Musigni section of Clos de Vougeot. Jean, who already had three children, took the Clos des Réas. The Richebourg was divided among them.

Today's Gros Domaines

The sixth generation, Jean's three children Michel, Anne-Françoise and Bernard, and François's daughter Anne, now run the family's main estates:

  • Domaine Michel Gros: Michel worked alongside his father for decades, producing wines under both the Jean Gros and Michel Gros labels. When Jean divided his holdings among his children in the mid-1990s, Michel received, among other parcels, the Clos des Réas and the family winery.
  • Domaine A.-F. Gros: Anne-Françoise took her share of the inheritance, including vineyards in Pommard, and bottles her Richebourg under the A.-F. Gros label.
  • Domaine Gros Frère et Sœur: Bernard took over his uncle Gustave and aunt Colette's domaine in the 1980s, and it became the main part of his inheritance. His son Vincent has taken on a growing role. Explore our Gros Frère et Sœur collection.
  • Domaine Anne Gros: Anne began working with her father in the 1980s, when the François Gros label became Anne et François Gros (A. & F. Gros, not to be confused with her cousin's A.-F. Gros). After François's death, the label became simply Anne Gros.

Making Sense of the Labels

The Gros family can be confusing to follow, thanks to similar label names and a mix of vineyard ownership and management arrangements. The family remains close, and it is common for siblings and cousins to sell grapes or lease vineyards to one another. We love family businesses (but we are biased!), and the Gros story is a refreshing example of hard-working people with strong family bonds.

At Aabalat Fine & Rare Wines, we offer a changing selection of wines from across the Gros family. Explore the available wines below to find your next addition to the cellar.
