Domaine Gros Frère et Sœur belongs to one of Burgundy's best-known wine families, whose roots in Vosne-Romanée go back to the 19th century (read more about the Gros dynasty). The domaine takes its name from the brother and sister who founded it, Gustave and Colette Gros. Their nephew Bernard Gros, a son of Jean Gros, took over in the 1980s after Gustave's death, and his son Vincent, who trained in oenology, has taken on a growing role in the winemaking.
The domaine's holdings include grand cru Richebourg, Grands-Échezeaux, Échezeaux and Clos de Vougeot, including the well-placed Musigni parcel, along with Vosne-Romanée village and premier cru vineyards. Bernard also developed a substantial vineyard in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, which produces both red and white wines.
Upon taking over, Bernard set about upgrading the vineyards and the winery. It took many years and considerable investment, including replanting weaker vines with finer selections, and today the cellar is modern and immaculate, apart from one small niche kept in its original state, fuzzy cellar mold and all.
The wines are known for exuberance and power, with expressive aromatics and firm structure. Yields are strictly limited for depth and concentration, the wines are not filtered, and the grand crus are raised in new oak that is well integrated rather than obtrusive. Compared with the wines of his cousin Anne Gros or his brother Michel Gros, Bernard's wines tend to offer more intensity and benefit from time in the cellar.
We think the domaine is one of the most beautiful in Vosne-Romanée. At Aabalat Fine & Rare Wines, we offer a changing selection of Gros Frère et Sœur vintages. Explore the available wines below to find your next addition to the cellar.
