About Domaine de Cambes
Domaine de Cambes is made by the Mitjavile family, best known for Le Tertre Rôtebœuf in Saint-Émilion. In 1988 François Mitjavile bought Roc de Cambes, an estate in the Côtes de Bourg, and Domaine de Cambes comes from vines next to Roc de Cambes. It is made at the Roc de Cambes cellar, and the family, including François's daughter Nina, oversees both wines.
Although it shares a cellar and a team with Roc de Cambes, Mitjavile insists that Domaine de Cambes is not a second wine. Its vineyard lies outside the Côtes de Bourg appellation, so it is labeled simply as Bordeaux. The vines sit lower and closer to the Gironde, on soils with more clay and sand, giving a slightly cooler site.
The result is a Merlot-dominated wine with much of the structure and finesse of its better-known siblings, made in the house style often described as suave and exotic, with smooth, caressing tannins. Because it costs far less than Roc de Cambes or Tertre Rôtebœuf, Domaine de Cambes is an excellent introduction to Mitjavile's wines.
