Le Tertre Rôtebœuf has become one of Saint-Émilion's cult producers, and demand for its wines has risen sharply. François Mitjavile has run the estate since 1978, when he took over the family property that came through his father-in-law, Emile Gilard. The vineyard covers about 6 hectares of clay and limestone on a steep, south-facing slope and is planted mainly with Merlot, along with some Cabernet Franc. The estate deliberately remains outside the Saint-Émilion classification.
The property was once known simply as Le Tertre, a name shared by many other Bordeaux estates. Mitjavile added "Rôtebœuf", which loosely translates as "belching beef", to set it apart. It is a name few wine lovers forget.
Mitjavile began his career in wine with an apprenticeship at Château Figeac, then developed a style entirely his own that critics admire for its consistency, richness and elegance. He moved to aging in new French oak, picks late once the grapes are fully ripe, and favors sustainable vineyard work. From the 1989 vintage onward, the wines have been in strong demand. They are typically described as suave and exotic, with smooth, caressing tannins.
For a more accessible introduction to François Mitjavile's winemaking, look for his Côtes de Bourg wines, Roc de Cambes and Domaine de Cambes.
