Château Cheval Blanc lies in the northwest of Saint-Émilion, on the border with Pomerol. Its vineyard is planted mainly to Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with a small share of Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc plays an unusually large part in the blend for a Right Bank estate.
In 1998 Bernard Arnault and Baron Albert Frère acquired the estate. In 2009 LVMH took over Bernard Arnault's 50 percent share.
Cheval Blanc was ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé "A" from the first Saint-Émilion classification in 1955. In 2021 the estate announced that it would not take part in the 2022 revision of the classification.
Le Petit Cheval is the estate's second red wine, from the Saint-Émilion vineyard. Petit Cheval Blanc, listed here as Le Petit Cheval Bordeaux Blanc, is a dry white made from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. It is sold as Bordeaux Blanc because the Saint-Émilion appellation covers red wine only.
