Château Angélus has been shaped by the de Boüard de Laforest family, who have been tied to the estate for eight generations. The name comes from the Angélus, the bells rung for a traditional Catholic devotion: from the vineyard, workers could hear the bells of three nearby churches. The bell remains the estate's emblem and appears on its label, corks, cases and capsules, as well as in a sculpture at the château.
The vineyard lies on gently sloping land at the foot of the Saint-Émilion côte, with limestone and clay soils planted to Merlot and an unusually high proportion of Cabernet Franc for the appellation. The estate has old vines of both varieties, and new plantings have been made at higher density. Vineyard work includes debudding, crop thinning and pruning by the Girondine method.
The estate's rise is closely tied to Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, who joined the family estate in the 1970s and introduced a series of modernizing changes: hand harvesting and careful sorting, fermentation in open-top vats, malolactic fermentation in barrel, maturation in new oak with ageing on the lees, and farming and vinifying parcel by parcel. Today the estate is led by his daughter, Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal.
Angélus climbed steadily through the Saint-Émilion classification and was promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé A in 2012. In January 2022, it withdrew its candidacy from the 2022 classification, so it no longer holds an official Saint-Émilion classification rank, although it remains one of the most sought-after estates on the Right Bank.
The style of Angélus is lush, dense and creamy, yet elegant and fresh, with dark fruit, smoke and graphite notes and a long, layered finish. Wine from the estate that is not selected for the grand vin goes into the second wine, Carillon d'Angélus, and a third wine, No. 3 d'Angélus, is made to be enjoyed young. At Aabalat Fine & Rare Wines, we offer a changing selection of Angélus vintages. Explore the available wines below to find your next addition to the cellar.
