Château Le Pape has a rich history dating back to the 18th century, when it was founded by Pierre Bobineau, a master sailmaker from Bordeaux. Recognizing the potential of gravelly soils in Léognan, he gradually assembled small vineyard plots to establish the estate.

From the 1960s through the 1990s, Château Le Pape was leased to the Perrin family, owners of the neighboring Château Carbonnieux. This long-term arrangement influenced the estate's vineyard management and winemaking approach.

In 2012, Château Le Pape was acquired by the Wilmers family, who also own Château Haut-Bailly. Significant investments were made in both the vineyard and winery, elevating the estate’s reputation and quality. By 2022, the vineyards of Château Le Pape were fully integrated into Château Haut-Bailly, marking a new chapter in its history. As a result, the 2021 vintage was the last to be released under the Château Le Pape label, with the estate’s vineyards now contributing to Haut-Bailly’s wines.

While Château Le Pape remains a landmark in Pessac-Léognan, its legacy continues within the prestigious wines of Château Haut-Bailly.
