Scarecrow owes a lot of its value and reputation to its terroir and fruit. But there is also a story behind the wine that people connect with on a deeper level. The wine label is a nod to Hollywood legend, J.J. Cohn, who produced many well-known films, among them the Wizard of Oz. And the magic of this film is a perfect analogy for the life of J.J. Cohn. Born in Harlem in 1895 to Russian immigrants, he started as a bookkeeper and worked his way up to Chief of Production. He bought a Napa property as a vacation home for his family and turned it into one of the most sought-after vineyards in the country. Countless family and friends recount their fond memories of his hospitality and kindness, particularly his grandson, Bret Lopez, who obtained a sizable chunk of "Grandpa Joe's" land after his death in 1996. Lopez and the team at Scarecrow are proud to be part of J.J. Cohn's living legacy. Regarding the 2012 M. Etain specifically, the winemaker, Celia Welch, had the follow to say: "Although the highest-toned, most perfumed aromas of ripe black cherries and raspberries jump immediately from the glass, with a short swirl of the wine one quickly senses the darker cedar, clove and sandalwood notes which create a sense of depth and complexity."

94 pts - Wine Advocate

["The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon M. Etain is in essence a second wine, but it sure doesn’t taste like one. Its deep purple color is followed by pure black raspberry and blackcurrant fruit, dusty, loamy soil notes, extraordinary depth of fruit, ripeness and good acidity. This opulent, round beauty is ideal for drinking over the next decade or more. - eRobertParker.com, RP (10/2014)"]

93 pts - Wine Spectator

["Features crushed rock, damp earth, cedar and cigar box flavors, with a savory dried herb accent dominating the core of dusty berry, licorice and blackberry. The tannins cling on the finish. Drink now through 2030. 1,900 cases made.-JL"]
