The 2004 Harlan Estate Napa Valley Proprietary Red 750 ml is from the Napa Valley region of California. Since its first commercial release of the 1990 vintage, Harlan has been producing top notch wines that impress critics and are coveted by enthusiasts. Production from their vineyards in the western hillsides of Oakville, planted to 70% cabernet, 20% merlot, 8% cab franc and 2% petit verdot, averages 1,800 cases annually. As Robert Parker says, "These wines possess all the elements of greatness - individuality, power combined with elegance, extraordinary complexity, remarkable aging potential, and compelling richness without ponderousness." To reinforce the accuracy of this sentiment, Robert Parker has awarded the Harlan Estate wine 100-points for five different vintages. The extreme market demand often pushes the price points for these wines into the thousands. Fora slightly more affordable taste of the illustrious Harlan wines, perhaps try their second wine, called The Maiden, that unmistakably resembles her “big sister” and consistently scores 91-94 points from Wine Advocate. 98 pts - Wine Advocate

["Very deep garnet-black colour with a purple rim. Though still very youthful and muted, this vintage is already subtly revealing a wide array of aromas including blackberry tart, cedar, violets, truffles, liquorice and all spice. In the mouth however this is no shrinking violet – the ’04 is a big, concentrated and highly structured wine with somewhat impenetrable, tightly grained tannins and medium to high acid supporting its rich weight. Very, very long finish displaying hints of savoury earthiness and that signature minerality that appears to surface in better years. Drink 2009 – 2030. Tasted November 2008. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown"]

95 pts - Vinous
