Sassicaia, from the Tuscan coastal area of Bolgheri, was established in the 1940s and sold publicly since the 1968 vintage. A blend of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, Bordeaux-style grapes, Sassicaia has a terroir on the Tenuta San Guido estate and winemaking barriques that mimic that of Graves, Bordeaux. Sassicaia is not only the most collectible Italian wine, but the vision of its founder, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who wanted a bouquet and age-worthy elegance like that of Bordeaux, made a ground-breaking change to the world’s perception of fine Italian wine. Wines of this caliber from this region are now called “Supertuscan.”

78 pts - Wine Spectator

["Relatively light, with sweet cherry, red berry character that improves in the glass. Somewhat diluted and a short finish. A difficult vintage in Tuscany. This will probably improve with cellaring."]
