The 1989 Lafleur, tasted side by side with the 1990 on two occasions in 2002, plays it closer to the vest. The wine needs far more coaxing to produce the licorice, black cherry liqueur, earth, and truffle notes from the nose. In the mouth, the wine is full-bodied, tannic, backward, and very tightly knit, with mouth-searing levels of tannin and extremely high extract. The tannins are firmer, the fruit seemingly less sweet, but still extremely ripe, and the evolutionary process is far slower in the 1989 than the 1990. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2045. Last tasted, 8/02.- Robert Parker Jr. (01/2003)

Very dark-ruby color. Cherry, blackberry and dark chocolate aromas. Full-bodied and powerful, with loads of tannins and chunky fruit. Closed, not giving away much right now; give it time. Typically muscular Lafleur.--1989 Bordeaux horizontal. Best after 2008. –JS WS

Deep red-ruby color. Liqueur-like aromas of roasted redcurrant, plum, mint and burnished wood. Thick, powerful and unrefined; a superripe, huge wine with elevated alcohol. Seemed to take on more shape and grip as it opened in the glass. Finishes fresh but hugely tannic, with somewhat aggressive tannins, a hint of alcoholic warmth and superb persistence. I thought this was the '82. Drink from 28 through 225.- Stephen Tanzer (7/22)
