The 1961 L'Evangile Pomerol 1.5 L is from the Pomerol region of Bordeaux.

100 pts - Wine Advocate

The 1961 possesses a huge nose of coffee, sweet, jammy, black fruits, buttered nuts, and truffles. The syrupy texture, and fabulous concentration, viscosity, and richness were unbelievable. Given its port-like richness, this full-bodied, massively endowed, fully mature wine is reminiscent of the great 1947. Interestingly, Madame Ducasse told me that two-thirds of the vineyard was replanted in 1957, so 66% of the blend is from 3-year old vines! Readers who are fortunate enough to have bottles of this nectar should plan on drinking it over the next 10-15 years. - WA 99-100 (10/1994) Tasted 5 Times With Inconsistent Notes - WA, RP (10/1994)

83 pts - Wine Spectator

Tasted from magnum. Not everyone's cup of claret, because of its extremely mature and aromatic style, but a nice glass of wine anyway. It has strong caramel and butterscotch flavors overriding a pruny fruit component.--1961 Bordeaux horizontal. Drink now through 1998. - WS (4/1996)

96 pts - Vinous

Full, deep red with an amber rim. Exotic, roasted aromas of red berry liqueur, mocha, truffle, underbrush and mint. Wonderfully sweet, opulent and decadent, with a level of extract rarely found in today Bordeaux. But a powerful backbone keeps this 41-year-old wine amazingly firm. Finishes with roasted ripeness and great persistence. Drink through 2012. - IWC (8/2002)
