The estate was established by a nobleman named Alexandre de Ségur, who also owned other prestigious Bordeaux vineyards. Under the ownership of the de Ségur family, the estate gained prominence and began to produce high-quality wines.

In 1853, Château Brane-Mouton went through a significant change when it was purchased by Nathaniel de Rothschild, a member of the famous Rothschild banking family. Nathaniel renamed the estate as Château Mouton Rothschild, marking the beginning of a new era for the property.

Over the next few decades, Château Mouton Rothschild underwent significant improvements and expansions. The vineyards were expanded, and the winemaking techniques were modernized, further enhancing the quality of the wines produced. The estate gained a reputation for producing exceptional Bordeaux wines, becoming one of the leading wineries in the region.

In 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the grandson of Nathaniel, took over the management of Château Mouton Rothschild. Baron Philippe was a visionary and a driving force behind the estate's success. He introduced several innovations and initiatives, including bottling the wine at the estate itself, rather than relying on merchants to do it. He also established the tradition of commissioning famous artists to design the labels for each vintage, a practice that continues to this day and has become one of the distinguishing features of Château Mouton.

In 1973, Château Mouton Rothschild achieved a significant milestone when it was officially classified as a First Growth, the highest rank in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. This recognition solidified the estate's status among the elite wineries of Bordeaux.

Today, Château Mouton Rothschild remains under the ownership and management of the Rothschild family. The estate spans over 200 acres of vineyards, primarily planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot grape varieties.
