Montrachet is an appellation in the Burgundy region of France. It produces what many consider to be the greatest dry white wine (Chardonnay) in the world. Although labeled as an AOC, it is really just a large, just shy of 20-acres, Grand Cru vineyard in the Cote de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy. It is surrounded by four other Grand Cru vineyards all having "Montrachet" as part of their names. Montrachet itself is generally considered superior to its four Grand Cru neighbors, as reflected in its higher price. And in typical Burgundy fashion, within that 20-acre plot there are approximately 18 owners and 26 producers, the most famous of which is Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, who owns less than two acres. Quality and soil types vary dramatically among the different growers, but generally wine from Montrachet (after 10 years) are brighter gold, have more scent, longer flavor, and more succulence and density than other whites of the world. Prices can range from about $150-2500 per bottle, depending on the producer.
