The 2004 Verite La Joie Cabernet 750 ml is from the North Coast region of California. Vérité has received a lot of press lately due to their seven 100-point scores they have received from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. This is the first time a Sonoma County winery has received this many perfect scores. Vérité has three red blends: Le Désir, predominantly Cabernet Franc supported by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, shows layers of concentrated fruit, exotic spice, opulent aromatics and a plush suede texture. La Joie exhibits the structure, depth and power of Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma County, and takes inspiration from the lauded reds France's Pauillac. La Muse has supple fruit and spice, exceptional balance and impressive length, and is crafted primarily from Merlot in the style of the great wines of Pomerol. Pierre Seillan is the genius behind these wines. As vigneron (not just winemaker), he executes his vision from roots to release. He exploits the soil, which varies greatly even within their estate vineyards, to take full advantage of its potential. During our visit there a few years back we also got to see his intricate canopy system that ensures the grapes get just the right amount of exposure. And how he crafts the juice is truly an art form. Clearly, Pierre's decisions are turning out perfect, or near perfect, wine, and that is something you definitely want to try!

99 pts - Wine Advocate

Another great showing for a wine from this vintage, the 2004 La Joie is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. The majority of the fruit came from the Alexander Mountain Estate, followed by Knight’s Valley, Bennett Valley and Chalk Hill. Full-bodied, powerful and concentrated, it is richer than either the 2003 and 2001, and comes closer to the 2002’s personality. Sweet notes of caramels, espresso roast, forest floor, camphor, plums, chocolate and blackberries emerge from this full-bodied, unctuously textured, chewy, fleshy 2004. It requires another 3-5 years of bottle age and should keep for two decades or more. - WA, RP (4/2014)

94 pts - Vinous

(65% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 10% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot) Bright ruby-red. Black and blue fruits complicated by licorice, minerals and fresh herbs on the nose. Rich, broad, lush and full, even if it conveys less easy sweetness and personality today than the Muse (but then this is Seillan's Pauillac-style blend). Best today on the sensational back half, which features a major coating of suave tannins and an extremely long, aromatic finish that reverberates with subtle floral tones. Interestingly, this cabernet-based wine has a higher pH than the merlot-based Muse: 3.78 vs. 3.64.- Stephen Tanzer (05/2007)
