Founded in 1850, Domaine Drouhin-Laroze is one of Burgundy’s most enduring family estates, now guided by the sixth generation, Philippe and Christine Drouhin, with their children Caroline and Nicolas continuing the family legacy. The domaine is based in Gevrey-Chambertin, the heart of the Côte de Nuits, and has quietly built one of the most impressive portfolios of Grands Crus and Premiers Crus in Burgundy.
Over more than 170 years, Drouhin-Laroze has remained steadfast in its philosophy of expressing purity, finesse, and terroir—a style that balances modern precision with a deep respect for tradition. While early generations were among the first in Gevrey to bottle their own wines rather than sell to négociants, the current team has elevated the domaine into the top tier of Côte de Nuits producers through meticulous vineyard work, selective use of whole cluster fermentation, and an approach that highlights texture and minerality over power.
Their vineyard holdings span some of the greatest terroirs in Burgundy, including Chambertin, Clos de Bèze, Clos de Vougeot, Latricières-Chambertin, Chapelle-Chambertin, and, notably, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru, which bridges the villages of Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny.
Bonnes Mares: Elegance on the Chambolle Side
Drouhin-Laroze’s parcel of Bonnes Mares lies on the Chambolle-Musigny side of the vineyard, adjacent to holdings of Domaine Dujac and Domaine Roumier. This section is distinguished by its lighter, white-marl soils, producing wines of striking finesse and aromatic lift, in contrast to the darker, clay-rich soils on the Morey side that yield more muscular expressions.
In recent vintages, Philippe and Nicolas Drouhin have introduced partial whole-cluster fermentation (20–30%), adding nuance, spice, and floral dimension without compromising the domaine’s hallmark balance. The resulting Bonnes Mares is a grand vin of grace and depth—perfumed with violets, black cherry, and exotic spice, carried by refined tannins and a long, mineral finish.
