About Obsidian Ridge

Obsidian Ridge has been one of the "everyday drinkers" in our home for years. The quality and balance are remarkable, with beautiful fruit, wonderful minerality and supple tannins, at a price that makes it easy to open on a weeknight.

The vineyard sits at about 2,640 feet high in the Mayacamas Mountains, in the Red Hills of Lake County. It was planted in 1999 on the site of an abandoned walnut orchard, on volcanic soils strewn with black obsidian boulders that gave the estate its name. High elevation brings thicker grape skins and more demanding growing conditions, which produce concentrated flavors and ripe, refined tannins.

Obsidian Ridge is made by Obsidian Wine Co., founded by brothers Arpad and Peter Molnar with winemaker Michael Terrien. Their father, Nicholas Molnar, left Hungary after the 1956 uprising and began developing vineyards in Napa and Carneros in the late 1960s. The family's Hungarian roots also show in the cellar: the wines are aged in Hungarian oak, and the family owns a cooperage in Hungary.

The Molnars also farm Poseidon Vineyard in Carneros, planted by Nicholas Molnar in 1973 near the confluence of Carneros Creek and the Napa River. Its cool, low-lying site, close to San Francisco Bay, produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir under its own label, a deliberate contrast to the high, volcanic slopes of Obsidian Ridge.
