About Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret

The Mongeard family's story began in the eighteenth century in Vosne-Romanée, the heart of the Côte de Nuits. After eight generations, the family remains close-knit and still makes wine from all of its family holdings: about 30 hectares across 35 different climats and appellations, including small parcels of Clos de Vougeot and Richebourg. Keeping such holdings intact under Napoleonic inheritance laws is a remarkable feat, and a collection of vineyards that would be nearly impossible to assemble from scratch today.

Like many Burgundy growers before World War II, the family originally sold its wine in barrel to wine merchants and négociants. When 16-year-old Jean Mongeard became responsible for the family's wine business after the death of his father, Eugène, he received a rare request to bottle and sell the entire 1945 crop to a single buyer, and he seized the opportunity. From then on, bottling and selling their own wine became the domaine's routine.

Burgundian winemaking tradition remains central at Mongeard-Mugneret and has carried from generation to generation. In 1985, Jean handed responsibility for winemaking to his 29-year-old son, Vincent, under whom quality has remained consistent or improved every year. One small but important change Vincent made, in 1998, was to the domaine's barrel sourcing, which has helped showcase the fruit and terroir.

Apart from Richebourg, the grapes are fully destemmed. Cold maceration lasts four to five days, followed by natural-yeast fermentation over 12 to 15 days in stainless steel vats. Gentle pressing prevents excess tannin, and malolactic fermentation and élevage take place in up to 60% new oak barrels. After about 18 to 22 months of aging, the wines may be fined once but are never filtered. The result is a lineup of concentrated, well-proportioned wines that become more elegant and refined over the years.

The domaine's wide range of vineyards allows it to offer something special at every price point. Its Grand Crus include Clos de Vougeot, Grands-Échezeaux and Échezeaux. Its Premier Crus include Vosne-Romanée En Orveaux, Les Suchots and Les Petits Monts, Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Boudots, Vougeot Les Cras and Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Narbantons. Village wines include Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Fixin, Savigny-lès-Beaune and Puligny-Montrachet.

Jean Mongeard's legacy extends beyond the domaine. As President of the Association des Viticulteurs de la Côte d'Or for many years, and as one of the most prominent growers in Vosne-Romanée, he helped guide the region's wine industry.

Our Visit to the Domaine

We had the pleasure of visiting the beautiful Vosne-Romanée estate for a tasting and lunch we will never forget. From the moment we arrived, we were struck by how close Mongeard-Mugneret sits to so many Grand Cru vineyards and producers. The domaine is right in the middle of the most prestigious wine "dirt" in the world, and walking onto the property felt like walking into the family's home.

Tasting room at Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret with historic bottles and a collection of tastevins

We tasted in a welcoming space adjacent to the winery, and the lineup gave us a real sense of the domaine's winemaking style and an appreciation for its terroirs. Afterward, we enjoyed a two-hour Burgundian fusion lunch, accompanied by a bottle of 2015 Bourgogne Blanc, at the Mongeard-Mugneret hotel restaurant. The food, the peaceful patio on a sunny day and the views of Vosne-Romanée made it one of our favorite afternoons of the entire trip. If you are visiting Burgundy, we highly recommend a stop.
