For some 300 years, the Latour-Giraud family has been making wine in Meursault, passing down its methods from one generation to the next. Jean-Pierre Latour, the family winemaker, grew up in the winery, doing small tasks from the age of six and learning the craft from his father and the cellar team. By adulthood he was thoroughly schooled in the family's traditions, which he has refined in his own style over the decades. The quintessential Burgundian family business, Latour-Giraud combines prime vineyard holdings with a scale small enough to focus on every detail.
About 80% of the domaine is planted to Chardonnay, from the Meursault climats Les Genevrières, Les Charmes, Les Perrières, Les Bouchères and Le Poruzot. Jean-Pierre keeps the white wines on their lees until he judges them ready and racks as little as possible. The wines are fined but not filtered, which he believes is important to their quality, and they are bottled by hand, batch by batch, only when each is ready.
The red wines are destemmed and given a five-day cold maceration, then aged on their lees in barrel (about 25% new) for a year. Racking takes place just before hand bottling, without fining or filtration. The result across the range is wine of intensity and balance, with elegant aromatics of fruit, spice and flowers, layers of flavor and a stony minerality.
Latour-Giraud is not only one of the top producers in Burgundy but one that is near and dear to our hearts. After selling Jean-Pierre Latour's wines for many years, we finally met him during a trip to Burgundy and spent an afternoon with him at his historic Meursault winery, tasting through several of his 2015 Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. Jean-Pierre is a delightful man and a fabulous winemaker, and we tasted through each of his Meursault climats.

Having tasted at several other wineries in the neighborhood before our visit, we were struck by how clearly the character of each climat came through. The "hype" around Burgundy's terroir is true. Jean-Pierre's wines reflect his personality, thoughtful and genuine, and those qualities carry from vine to bottle in every label he makes. Every bottle in his portfolio is worthy of serving to your most special guests. It is hard to pick a favorite, but the 2015 Meursault Genevrières stood out for us.
At Aabalat Fine & Rare Wines, we offer a changing selection of Latour-Giraud vintages. Explore the available wines below to find your next addition to the cellar.
