The 1997 Colgin Napa Valley Herb Lamb Cabernet Sauvignon 750 ml is from the Napa Valley region of California. Colgin Cellars produces exquisitely handcrafted red wines using only the finest neo-classical winemaking methods in concert with small yields, gentle handling, attentive sorting and meticulous blending. The Colgin winery, completed in 2002, is located at the northern end of IX Estate in the Pritchard Hill area of St. Helena, California. Founded in 1992 by Florida art dealers Ann Colgin and Fred Schrader, Colgin impressed critics early on with their Herb Lamb Vineyard, at the base of Howell Mountain, cabernet. Their rich wines have just the right amount of silkiness and supple tannins, driving demand through the roof and a long waitlist for purchasing their wines.

Sadly only 400 cases were made of the 1997. The nearly perfect 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Herb Lamb Vineyard was bottled in May, 1999, and appears to have recovered beautifully from bottle shock. Saturated black/purple-colored with a knock-out nose of blackberries, blueberries, lavender, licorice, and toast, this is a profound, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon. It displays a seamless, velvety texture, layers of concentrated fruit, and a 45+ second finish. Am I being too conservative in not giving it a 3-digit score? (45 cases produced): Deep black ruby. Crystallized black cherry, black raspberry, blackberry, boysenberry, bitter chocolate, shoe polish and sexy oak tones on the perfumed, slightly floral nose. Supple entry, then quite unforthcoming in the middle palate. But already displays uncanny texture and depth, as well as extraordinary ripeness which somewhat mitigates this wine's normal impression of austerity. Distinctly Latour-like. Finishes with strong, tongue-dusting tannins and great persistence. A superb vintage for this boutique cabernet. 94(+?).- Stephen Tanzer (5/2)
