The 1996 Shafer Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon 750 ml is from the Stags Leap District region of California. Shafer Vineyards, from the Stags Leap district of Napa Valley, began in 1972 when John Shafer left his 23-year publishing career to start a new family venture in wine. With the help of his son, Doug, they replanted all the existing vines in the first years of business and, in 1978, crushed their first lot of cabernet grapes. Since their first release, Shafer wines have impressed enthusiasts and critics alike. They have received several perfect scores from Robert Parker for their 'Hillside Select,' and a list of other accolades that is too long to list. Known for its silky tannins, Shafer's Hillside Select is aged a full four years prior to release. There is no doubt, Shafer Vineyards is one of Napa's, and maybe even the world's, very best producers of cabernet sauvignon.

93 pts - Wine Advocate

A drought year produced the 1996 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select, which is slightly more compact than great vintages, but nevertheless impressive. It offers further evidence that even in more challenging years, the Hillside Select is a special wine. Dense plum/purple with notes of cedarwood, charcoal, underbrush and forest, the wine has plenty of cassis, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, ripe tannin, but a slightly less impressive finish than the 1995 or 1994. This wine seems to be in its plateau of full maturity, where it should hold for at least another 10-12 years. - eRobertParker.com, RP (12/2014)

(14.3% alcohol; from a warmer vintage, like 1992, according to Doug Shafer): Deep red. Shows a distinctly ripe, even roasted quality to the aromas of musky plum, currant and underbrush. Silky and plush in the mouth, with sweet plum and dried berry flavors complemented by a note of milk chocolate. Finishes tannic and dry, with a suggestion of black tea tannins. This is 15+% alcohol, and yet there's a faint suggestion of stemminess.- Stephen Tanzer (7/216)
