The 1990 Shafer Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon 750 ml is from the Stags Leap District region of California. Shafer Vineyards, from the Stags Leap district of Napa Valley, began in 1972 when John Shafer left his 23-year publishing career to start a new family venture in wine. With the help of his son, Doug, they replanted all the existing vines in the first years of business and, in 1978, crushed their first lot of cabernet grapes. Since their first release, Shafer wines have impressed enthusiasts and critics alike. They have received several perfect scores from Robert Parker for their 'Hillside Select,' and a list of other accolades that is too long to list. Known for its silky tannins, Shafer's Hillside Select is aged a full four years prior to release. There is no doubt, Shafer Vineyards is one of Napa's, and maybe even the world's, very best producers of cabernet sauvignon.

92 pts - Wine Advocate

Spicy, cedary, unsmoked cigar tobacco, blackcurrant, sweet cherry and vanillin notes are present in the 1990 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select, along with loads of fruit, a monolithic, plump, rich, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and a good finish. - eRobertParker.com, RP (12/2014)

(13.5% alcohol; Doug Shafer refers to this wine as "the first vintage of the modern era"): Dark red with an amber rim. Very ripe aromas of plum, mocha, coffee and spices, complicated by a saline element that carries through onto the palate. Distinctly finer-grained than the earlier vintages, offering a pliant texture to its musky flavors of plum and roast coffee. Tannins are fully resolved. Drink up. Beginning with this vintage, the Hillside Select has been aged in 1% new French oak. Incidentally, Shafer noted that despite the cool summer in 199, the team got the small crop riper than any vintage of the 198s.- Stephen Tanzer (7/216)
