About Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild, in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux, has a rich history spanning several centuries. In the early 18th century the estate was acquired by Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, who also owned other prestigious Bordeaux vineyards, and it later became known as Château Brane-Mouton.

In 1853, the estate was purchased by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, a member of the famous banking family, who renamed it Château Mouton Rothschild, marking the beginning of a new era for the property. Over the following decades the vineyards and winemaking were improved, and the estate built a reputation as one of the leading wineries in the region.

In 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild took over the management of Mouton and became the driving force behind its modern success. He introduced bottling the entire harvest at the château rather than leaving it to merchants, a practice that began in the 1920s. He also established the tradition of commissioning artists to design the label for each vintage, which became an annual custom after World War II and has featured works by many of the world's great artists.

In 1973, Mouton Rothschild was elevated to First Growth status in the 1855 Classification, one of the only changes ever made to that historic ranking. Today the estate remains in the hands of the Rothschild family. Its roughly 90 hectares (about 222 acres) of vineyards are planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and its wines are renowned for their power, elegance and ability to age gracefully. Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild, the estate's second wine, offers a glimpse of the Mouton style.
