Readers wanting a jolt of blatant toasty oak with straightforward flavors reminiscent of cherry syrup, coffee, and herbs might appreciate this wine more than I. It is medium-bodied, monolithic, and best drunk over the next 8-10 years. Regarding the points/power ratio, I am reminded of an old retailer's sarcastic sales slogan - "Why pay less?" - Robert Parker Jr. (12/2000)

Tasted from magnum. Aromas of fresh dill and toast join ripe cherry and blackberry, with a touch of anise and sage. Elegantly styled, with a hint of sassafras, ending with ripe, integrated tannins.--'97 California Cabernet retrospective. Drink now through 2013. 30,000 cases made.- (2008)

Bright ruby. Cassis, violet and lightly tarry, spicy oak. Ripe, dense and very concentrated; thick and deep. Not at all overly sweet or dominated by the wood. Has superb material and verve. Finishes very long, with thoroughly ripe tannins. The finest vintage for this wine in a long time, and one that avoids the excesses of (American) oak that have plagued so many recent vintages.- Stephen Tanzer (11/2000)
