In France, Carignan was the most widely planted grape variety from the 1960s until 2000. However, large-scale vine removal programs in the 1980s almost halved its acreage by the end of the century. About three-quarters of France's Carignan is now found in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, where it is often used to produce basic Vin de France wines.
