Bual (or Boal in Portuguese) refers to several grape varieties in Portugal, as well as a medium-sweet style of Madeira wine. These grapes saw a significant increase in planting during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Another name for Bual is Malvasia Fina, as mentioned in official Madeira records, although some experts dispute this connection. This name is also used by some producers on the Portuguese mainland. However, Bual is distinct from the larger Malvasia family of grapes.
The most well-known Bual variety is Boal Branco (also called Boal Cachudo), which is the grape used in Madeira. Other types of Bual/Boal include Boal Bagudo, Boal Bonifácio (also known as Vital or Malvasia Corada), Boal Barreiro, Boal Carrasquenho, Boal de Alicante, Boal Espinho, and Boal Ratinho.
