The 2003 Verite Le Desir Cabernet 750 ml is from the North Coast region of California. Vérité has received a lot of press lately due to their seven 100-point scores they have received from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. This is the first time a Sonoma County winery has received this many perfect scores. Vérité has three red blends: Le Désir, predominantly Cabernet Franc supported by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, shows layers of concentrated fruit, exotic spice, opulent aromatics and a plush suede texture. La Joie exhibits the structure, depth and power of Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma County, and takes inspiration from the lauded reds France's Pauillac. La Muse has supple fruit and spice, exceptional balance and impressive length, and is crafted primarily from Merlot in the style of the great wines of Pomerol. Pierre Seillan is the genius behind these wines. As vigneron (not just winemaker), he executes his vision from roots to release. He exploits the soil, which varies greatly even within their estate vineyards, to take full advantage of its potential. During our visit there a few years back we also got to see his intricate canopy system that ensures the grapes get just the right amount of exposure. And how he crafts the juice is truly an art form. Clearly, Pierre's decisions are turning out perfect, or near perfect, wine, and that is something you definitely want to try!

My favorite of this trio is the 2003 Le Desir, a Sonoma County St.-Emilion look-alike made from 41% Cabernet Franc, 44% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Malbec (14.3% alcohol). Hints of graphite, mulberries, black cherries, black currants, licorice, dusty loamy soil, truffles and spice emerge from this strikingly fragrant, complex 2003. Full-bodied with formidable intensity, sweet tannin and a long, layered finish that lasts for nearly 50 seconds, this is a tour de force and a compelling 2003. Accessible now, it should continue to drink well for two decades. Bravo! -RP

(a St. Emilion-style blend of 44% merlot, 41% cabernet franc, 11% cabernet sauvignon and 4% malbec) Ruby-red. Brooding, perfumed aromas of dark fruits, violet and chocolate. Sweet and intensely flavored, with lively acids framing the currant, black raspberry, mineral and dark chocolate flavors. Very densely packed wine, with the sheer material to support its big, ripe tannins. Give this plenty of aeration if you plan to open a bottle anytime soon. Or, better yet, lay it down for six to eight years.- Stephen Tanzer (5/26)
