Peter Michael Winery, if you agree with Robert Parker, produces three Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir labels – Clos du Ciel, Ma Danseuse, and La Caprice - that can go toe-to-toe with Burgundy’s DRC…and sometimes win, especially if you consider the lower price point of the Peter Michael. Regularly scoring at least 98 points, these fabulous wines made by winemaker Nicolas Morlet come from their higher elevation Sonoma Coast “Seaview” vineyard. Equally fabulous, scoring high and reflecting an impeccable elegance, are their Chardonnay and Bordeaux blends, which come from both estate vineyards in Knights Valley, Oakville and Sonoma Coast, and from sourced sites in Alexander Valley, Santa Lucia Highlands, and Russian River. Sir Peter Michael is a successful worldwide entrepreneur and engineer with a portfolio of businesses from high tech to hospitality to commercial radio. Knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1989 in recognition for the prosperity spawned by his work, Sir Peter Michael clearly has a knack for growing successful ventures...and his California wine business is no different.

The Chardonnays from Peter Michael are easy to understand, but I am not sure Les Pavots is as fathomable. First of all, Les Pavots is made in a backward, Bordeaux-like style that does not offer the gush of jammy fruit so noticeable in many California Cabernets. However, this is an authoritatively rich wine overlaid with a structural profile that suggests the wine needs 4-5 years of cellaring - at least in top vintages such as California has experienced in the nineties. The superb 1994 Les Pavots is, to my palate, the finest example of this wine Peter Michael has yet made. Since its bottling, this deep, saturated purple-colored wine has taken on a gorgeous nose of cassis intermixed with violets, licorice, and attractive spicy oak. Sweet, rich, and surprisingly showy for a Les Pavots, this medium to full-bodied wine possesses a luscious, multi-layered texture, outstanding depth, and attractively integrated tannin and acidity. When I tasted it, it was more evolved and delicious than I had anticipated given its recent bottling. - Robert Parker (12/1997)
