The 2011 Les Forts de Latour Pauillac 750 ml is from the Pauillac region of Bordeaux. Chateau Latour is situated at the southeastern tip of Pauillac, in the Medoc region of Bordeaux. Along with its Grand Vin label, Latour also produces Les Forts de Latour as a second wine and “Le Pauillac” as a third wine. While the written history of the Latour terroir dates back to 1331, thriving vineyards, as we know of Latour today, didn’t take hold until about 1700. Land owners and winemakers have changed many times, but the demand for this premium wine has remained of the upmost highest echelon for the past 300 years. In fact, even in 1767 the price of a barrel of Latour was 20 times more expensive than a typical Bordeaux wine. Their ability to achieve excellence remains consistent, as evidenced by their high ratings and high demand.

One of the finest second wines now being made, Les Forts de Latour comes from the same parcel every year. The 2011 is composed of 61.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38.5% Merlot. Forty-three percent of the Latour production was relegated to this cuvee. Its opaque purple color is accompanied by a big, sweet nose of creme de cassis, underbrush, licorice and incense. Medium to full-bodied, deep, fleshy and already appealing, this 2011 should gain complexity over the next 5-7 years, and last for 15-20.- Robert Parker Jr. (04/2012)

Bright red-ruby. Fresh dark berries, flint and herbs on the nose. Spicy and taut, offering good lift to its blackcurrant and herb flavors, but high acidity gives this wine an almost shrill quality. Slightly pinched on the finish, with the blackcurrant and licorice notes repeating.- Ian D'Agata (07/2014)
