According to the house's history, the village's vineyards appear in the records of the powerful Abbey of Saint-Remi of Reims as early as 838 AD, and the name of the village is thought to come from Virius, a Roman soldier whose estate once stood there. The Arlaux name appears in an abbey document in 1320, connected with winemaking and the payment of tithes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDuring the French Revolution, the Royal Abbey of Saint-Remi was seized and sold as national property in 1792. Nicolas Arlaux then acquired the vineyards and land that the family had already worked for generations under the monks. According to the family, Jean Arlaux began making sparkling wine in 1826.
